The Three Anchored Moving Averages (VWAP / SMA / EMA) indicator allows users to plot and compare three different moving average types anchored to specific points in time to identify dynamic support, resistance, and trend origin points.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to analyze price action starting from significant market events or structural pivots. By selecting a specific starting bar, the moving averages calculate their values based only on data following that point, providing a "clean" look at the trend from a specific date.

  • Anchor Points: Users can set up to three independent anchor points. These are typically placed at significant highs, lows, or event-based candles (such as earnings or economic releases).
  • Sentiment Visualization: Each anchor can be assigned a sentiment which determines how the output is displayed.
    • Auto: Determines sentiment by detecting if the anchor is on a pivot high (Bearish) or pivot low (Bullish).
    • Bull/Bear: Forces the display of color-coded zones between the moving average of the high/low and the OHLC4 mid-point.
    • None: Displays only a single line based on the OHLC4 price.
  • Dynamic Zones: The indicator plots the high, mid, and low values of the selected MA type. The filled areas between these plots help identify potential reversal zones or continuation levels during pullbacks.

Details

The script provides four calculation modes: Simple Moving Average (SMA), Exponential Moving Average (EMA), Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP), and a hybrid SMA-VWAP mode.

The EMA calculation is designed to be more responsive to recent price action following the anchor point, while the VWAP integrates volume data to show the average price paid since the start of the specified period. The "SMA-VWAP" option provides a unique comparison by highlighting the relationship between price-based and volume-based averages.

By anchoring these calculations to specific timestamps, the indicator prevents "lag" from older, irrelevant price data. This is particularly useful for multi-timeframe analysis; an anchor set on a Daily chart remains fixed at the exact same time when switching to an Intraday timeframe, ensuring consistency in support/resistance levels.

Settings

  • Anchor Timeframe: Specifies the timeframe used for pivot detection and internal calculations.
  • Anchor Type: Selects the calculation method (SMA, EMA, VWAP, or SMA-VWAP).
  • Enable 1/2/3: Toggles the visibility of the respective anchor point.
  • Anchor 1/2/3: Sets the specific starting point in time for the calculation using a point-and-click interface.
  • Sentiment 1/2/3: Determines the visual output (Auto, Bull, Bear, or None) for each specific anchor.
  • Only Display if Chart =: A filter that ensures the moving averages only appear when the chart symbol matches the ticker specified in the "Chart Symbol" input.
  • Chart Symbol: The specific ticker required for the indicator to display when "Chart Matching" is enabled.
