Moving Average Cross Alert, Multi-Timeframe (MTF) (by ChartArt)
Sep 15, 2015

The Moving Average Cross Alert, Multi-Timeframe (MTF) indicator tracks the crossover of two moving averages across various timeframes to identify trend shifts and provide actionable entry signals.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend changes and potential market entries. Users can select between two moving averages with customizable lengths and calculation methods to suit different trading styles, such as day trading or swing trading.
The tool provides several visual cues:
- Trend Direction: The moving average lines change color based on whether they are ascending or descending.
- Crossovers: A cross marker appears on the chart whenever the short-period moving average crosses the long-period moving average.
- Buy/Sell Signals: "Buy" and "Sell" arrows are plotted when a crossover occurs in alignment with price action (e.g., a bullish cross combined with a higher close).
- Multi-Timeframe Analysis: Users can plot moving averages from higher timeframes (like Weekly or 4-hour) onto their current lower-timeframe chart to maintain perspective on the broader trend.
Details
The script calculates two moving averages based on a user-defined price source and timeframe. It utilizes the request.security function to fetch data from different resolutions, allowing for MTF analysis.
The indicator supports four distinct calculation methods:
- SMA (Simple Moving Average): Provides an unweighted average of the price over the selected period.
- EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Places more weight on recent price data to reduce lag.
- WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Assigns a heavier weighting to the most recent data points linearly.
- Linear (Linear Regression): Uses a least-squares line to predict the current price value, often reacting faster to price changes than traditional MAs.
The "Buy" and "Sell" conditions are refined by ensuring that a crossover is supported by the current candle's closing price compared to the previous candle, filtering out some of the noise inherent in basic MA crosses.
Settings
- Price Source For The Moving Averages: Determines the price point used for calculations (e.g., Close, HL2, HLC3, OHLC4).
- Use Current Timeframe As Resolution?: When checked, the indicator uses the timeframe of the active chart.
- Use Different Timeframe?: Allows the user to specify a custom timeframe (e.g., "W" for weekly) if the current timeframe option is disabled.
- Short Period Moving Average: Sets the lookback period for the faster moving average.
- Long Period Moving Average: Sets the lookback period for the slower moving average.
- Moving Average Calculation: A dropdown menu to select between SMA, EMA, WMA, or Linear Regression calculations.
FAQ

Can I use this for scalping on 1-minute charts? Yes, by adjusting the "Short Period" and "Long Period" to lower values and selecting a responsive MA type like EMA or Linear, the indicator can be adapted for lower timeframes.
