Leo Moving Average
Dec 24, 2018

The Leo Moving Average indicator provides a responsive trend-following line by combining weighted and simple moving averages to reduce lag while maintaining smoothness. It is designed to help traders identify trend direction and potential reversals more quickly than standard moving average calculations.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used. Traders primarily use the Leo Moving Average (LMA) to determine the current market bias based on the slope and color of the indicator line.
- Trend Identification: When the LMA is sloping upwards and colored green, it indicates a bullish trend. Conversely, a downward-sloping red line indicates a bearish trend.
- Reversal Detection: A change in color serves as an early signal for a potential trend reversal. A shift from red to green suggests a bullish turn, while a shift from green to red suggests a bearish turn.
- Support and Resistance: Like other moving averages, the LMA can act as dynamic support during uptrends or dynamic resistance during downtrends.
Details
The Leo Moving Average is based on a specific mathematical combination of two different moving average types. It was originally developed by the user "Leo" on the ProRealCode platform.
The calculation follows a formula where the Weighted Moving Average (WMA) is given more weight, and the Simple Moving Average (SMA) is subtracted to offset lag:
LMA = 2 * WMA(source, length) - SMA(source, length)
By doubling the impact of the WMA and subtracting the SMA, the script reacts faster to price changes than a standard SMA of the same length, making it useful for scalping or capturing momentum shifts in volatile markets.
Settings
- Length: The lookback period used for both the WMA and SMA calculations. Higher values produce a smoother line with more lag, while lower values make the indicator more reactive to price movements.
- Highlight Movements?: A toggle to enable or disable color changes based on the LMA's direction. When enabled, the line changes color based on whether it is rising or falling.
- Source: The price data point used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes on the Leo Moving Average? A green line indicates that the LMA value is currently higher than the previous bar's value, suggesting bullish momentum. A red line indicates the value is lower than the previous bar, suggesting bearish momentum.
What is the advantage of using LMA over a standard SMA? The LMA is designed to reduce the "lag" inherent in traditional moving averages. Because it incorporates a weighted component, it stays closer to the current price action, allowing for faster entry and exit signals.
