The MACDe indicator is a trend-following momentum tool that adapts the traditional Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) formula by utilizing a combination of Exponential and Weighted Moving Averages to provide faster responsiveness to price changes.

Usage

The Usage of the MACDe indicator follows similar principles to the standard MACD but with adjusted sensitivities. Traders can utilize it for:

  • Trend Identification: When the MACDe line is above the zero line, the short-term momentum is generally considered bullish. Conversely, when it is below the zero line, the momentum is considered bearish.
  • Crossovers: A bullish signal is generated when the MACDe line crosses above the signal line, while a bearish signal is generated when it crosses below.
  • Histogram Analysis: The histogram represents the distance between the MACDe and the signal line. Increasing histogram bars indicate strengthening momentum, while decreasing bars suggest a potential slowdown or reversal.

The use of shorter default periods and a Weighted Moving Average (WMA) for the signal line aims to reduce lag compared to traditional settings.

Details

The MACDe differentiates itself from the classic MACD (which typically uses 12, 26, and 9 EMA periods) by employing more reactive settings and a hybrid calculation method.

The calculation process is as follows:

  1. Fast Line: An Exponential Moving Average (EMA) of the price with a default period of 8.
  2. Slow Line: An EMA of the price with a default period of 13.
  3. MACDe Value: The difference between the Fast EMA and the Slow EMA.
  4. Signal Line: A Weighted Moving Average (WMA) of the MACDe value with a default period of 5.
  5. Histogram: The difference between the MACDe value and the Signal line.

This combination of EMA for price smoothing and WMA for signal generation allows the indicator to react more quickly to price pivots. This concept was originally proposed by @kenyaborsa.

Settings

  • Fast Period: (Default: 8) Determines the length of the shorter-term Exponential Moving Average.
  • Slow Period: (Default: 13) Determines the length of the longer-term Exponential Moving Average.
  • Signal Period: (Default: 5) Determines the length of the Weighted Moving Average used to generate the signal line from the MACDe value.

FAQ

How do I interpret the zero line in MACDe? The zero line acts as a baseline for momentum. When the blue MACDe line crosses above zero, it indicates that the short-term average has crossed above the long-term average, signaling a potential uptrend.

What makes MACDe different from a standard MACD? MACDe uses shorter default lookback periods and replaces the standard Exponential Moving Average signal line with a Weighted Moving Average, resulting in faster signals and less lag.

How can I access the MACDe indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
