The Multi Moving Average / SMA5 indicator provides a streamlined way to visualize five distinct Simple Moving Averages (SMAs) simultaneously, enabling traders to analyze multi-period trend dynamics and potential crossover signals on a single chart.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This tool is primarily used to identify trend direction and momentum shifts across different time horizons. By plotting five different lengths, users can observe the stack order of the averages to determine market sentiment.

  • Trend Identification: When the shorter-term averages (e.g., 14 and 20) are positioned above the longer-term averages (e.g., 100 and 200), it typically indicates a bullish trend. Conversely, shorter averages below longer averages suggest a bearish trend.
  • Dynamic Support and Resistance: The various SMAs can act as dynamic areas of support or resistance during price retracements.
  • Crossovers: The indicator includes built-in logic for monitoring the relationship between the fastest and slowest averages. A "Golden Cross" or "Death Cross" logic can be applied when the "Very Short" SMA crosses the "Very Long" SMA.

Details

The Multi Moving Average / SMA5 is a refactored version of original code by @matsu_bitmex, optimized for modern charting performance. It calculates five standard Simple Moving Averages based on the closing price. The calculation follows the standard SMA formula, which sums the prices over a specific period and divides by that period.

The script is specifically designed to reduce chart clutter by consolidating five separate indicators into one, while including alert functionality for the crossover between the "Very Short" (14) and "Very Long" (200) parameters.

Settings

  • Very Short: Sets the period for the fastest SMA (Default: 14).
  • Short: Sets the period for the second SMA (Default: 20).
  • Middle: Sets the period for the medium-term SMA (Default: 75).
  • Long: Sets the period for the long-term SMA (Default: 100).
  • Very Long: Sets the period for the slowest SMA (Default: 200).

FAQ

How can I use this indicator for trend confirmation? You can look for "fan" patterns where all five SMAs are aligned in order of length. If they are expanding and ordered from shortest to longest (top to bottom), it confirms strong upward momentum.

Does this indicator provide alerts? Yes, the indicator triggers alerts when the "Very Short" SMA crosses above or below the "Very Long" SMA, signaling potential major trend reversals.
