CandelaCharts - Distributed Volume Matrix
May 25, 2026

The CandelaCharts - Distributed Volume Matrix indicator provides a granular heatmap of price-volume distribution to identify institutional liquidity zones and key market nodes. It visualizes the relationship between price action and volume intensity over a customizable lookback window, offering a high-fidelity alternative to traditional volume profiles.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used, including common strategic applications:
- Value Area Range Trading: Traders can identify mean-reverting opportunities by observing price rejection at the Value Area High (VAH) or Value Area Low (VAL). These levels often act as support or resistance, with the Point of Control (POC) serving as a primary magnet or profit target.
- Liquidity Node Reversals: By using the heatmap, users can spot high-volume nodes (represented by the brightest bins). Sharp price reversals often occur when the market interacts with these areas of extreme liquidity.
- Institutional Order Tracking: The "Big Order Bubbles" highlight bars with extraordinary volume relative to the moving average. When these bubbles appear during a rejection of the VAH/VAL or an interaction with the POC, they can confirm the strength of a potential trend reversal or breakout.
Details
The script utilizes advanced array management and user-defined types (UDT) to calculate volume distribution across a specified number of vertical "bins."
- Bipolar Heatmap: The matrix uses a diverging color palette; bins above the POC use a warm palette (default green), while those below use a cool palette (default red). This provides immediate visual context for current price relative to the highest volume area.
- Heatmap Stepping: This feature allows users to switch from a smooth gradient to a quantized "stepped" mode. This categorizes volume intensity into four distinct visual thresholds (Low, Medium, High, Extreme), making the structural nodes easier to read.
- Value Area Calculation: The tool automatically determines the range containing a user-defined percentage of total volume (default 70%). This area represents where the most "fair" value was perceived by market participants during the lookback period.
Settings
- Length: Determines the number of historical bars included in the volume distribution calculation.
- Number of Bins: Sets the vertical resolution/granularity of the matrix.
- Source: The price input used to calculate volume distribution across bins.
- Value Area (%): The percentage of total volume used to calculate the Value Area High and Low.
- Colors: Customizable settings for the Value Area, POC, Gaps, and Histogram (Above/Below POC).
- Use Heatmap Stepping: Toggles between a continuous color gradient and quantized opacity steps.
- Show Bin Volume: Displays the formatted volume numerical value on the left side of each bin.
- Bubbles: Enables the display of "Big Order Bubbles" and adjusts the volume threshold multiplier required to trigger them.
FAQ
How do I interpret the Point of Control (POC)? The POC is the price level with the highest traded volume within the lookback period. It represents the most significant area of agreement between buyers and sellers and often acts as a pivot or magnet for price action.
What is the benefit of "Heatmap Stepping"? Stepping simplifies the visual data by grouping volume intensity into specific buckets. This helps traders ignore minor volume fluctuations and focus on the most significant liquidity clusters.
