The Volumetric Support and Resistance indicator provides a concise map of high-probability reversal zones by combining classical structural pivots with volume-based significance filters. It aims to identify price levels where both market structure and heavy participation intersect, offering traders a dynamic view of supply and demand zones that evolve as price action unfolds.

Usage

The tool can be used to identify key areas of interest for trade planning and risk management.

  • Trade Planning: Use identified support and resistance zones as reference points for entries, profit-taking, or stop-loss placement. The ATR-scaled thickness of the boxes provides a volatility-aware buffer.
  • Confluence & Prioritization: When multiple levels are present, traders often prefer levels with higher touch counts or those marked as high volume, as these represent areas with greater historical participation.
  • Contextual Analysis: Combine these zones with candle patterns or trend-following systems. A breakout through a high-volume resistance zone carries more weight than a break through a "thin" level with low historical volume.
  • Regime Adaptation: Adjust the sensitivity and minimum distance settings based on market conditions. In fast-moving or trending markets, wider sensitivity can help avoid clutter, while tighter settings in ranging markets capture granular price turns.

Details

This tool operates through several key mechanisms:

  • Structural Detection: It uses pivot high and pivot low calculations to find meaningful swings in price action.
  • Volume Filtering: A pivot is only established as a level if the volume on that bar exceeds a user-defined multiplier relative to its average.
  • Distance Management: To ensure a clean chart, the indicator prevents "clustering" by skipping new levels that are too close (based on a percentage distance) to existing ones.
  • Strength Estimation: Volume strength is estimated by averaging the volume of recent bars that have traded through the price level. Levels with exceptionally high relative volume are visually highlighted with thicker borders.
  • Dynamic Evolution: Levels are not static; they track "touches" when price retests the zone and can be set to automatically remove themselves if price closes decisively through them (break detection).

Settings

Core Settings

  • Level Detection Sensitivity: Adjusts the pivot window for swing detection. Lower values find more frequent, tighter turns.
  • Volume Significance Multiplier: Sets the minimum volume ratio required to accept a pivot as a valid level.
  • Lookback Period: Defines the window for calculating average volume and general level maintenance rules.

Level Management

  • Maximum Active Levels: Caps the total number of levels drawn on the chart to prevent clutter.
  • Minimum Level Distance (%): Determines the required spacing between levels to prevent overlapping zones.

Visual Settings

  • Remove Broken Levels: When enabled, levels are deleted once price closes decisively through them based on an ATR threshold.
  • Show Volume Information on Levels: Toggles the display of volume data and touch counts.
  • Extend Levels to Right: Extends the level boxes into the future for forward-looking analysis.

Enhanced Visual Settings

  • Show Volume Text Inside Box: Chooses whether to place volume information inside the box or as a separate label.
  • Volume-Based Transparency/Thickness: Dynamically adjusts the visual weight of the box based on the strength of the volume at that level.

FAQ

How do I access Volumetric Support and Resistance?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

Why do some levels have thicker borders?

Levels with thicker borders indicate "High Volume" zones where the estimated volume strength significantly exceeds the average, suggesting higher market participation.

Why do levels disappear from my chart?

Levels may disappear if they are "broken" by price action (if that setting is enabled), if they reach the maximum lookback age, or if they are displaced by newer, more recent levels to respect the maximum active level limit.
