T3 Moving Average
Feb 21, 2018

The T3 Moving Average indicator provides a triple-smoothed exponential moving average designed to reduce lag and suppress noise for more accurate trend identification.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used. Traders primarily utilize the T3 Moving Average to identify trend direction and potential reversal points with less delay than traditional moving averages.
- Trend Identification: When the T3 line is rising, it indicates a bullish trend. Conversely, a falling T3 line indicates a bearish trend.
- Visual Cues: The indicator includes an optional coloring feature. A green line typically signifies upward momentum, while a red line signifies downward momentum.
- Signal Generation: Crossovers between the price and the T3 line, or changes in the slope of the T3 itself, can be used as entry or exit signals.
Details
The T3 Moving Average was introduced by Tim Tillson in his article "Smoothing Techniques For More Accurate Signals." It is constructed using a "Generalized DEMA" (GD) calculation applied multiple times. The process involves calculating an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and then applying a specific formula that incorporates a "volume factor" to balance smoothness and responsiveness. By nesting these GD calculations three times, the indicator achieves superior smoothing without the significant lag usually associated with high-period moving averages.
Settings
- Length: The lookback period used for the underlying EMA calculations. Higher values result in a smoother line but increased lag.
- Factor: A multiplier (ranging from 0 to 1) that controls the damping effect. A higher factor makes the moving average more responsive to recent price changes.
- Highlight Movements: A toggle to enable or disable the color-coding of the T3 line based on its directional slope.
- Source: The price data used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
FAQ
What makes the T3 different from a standard EMA? The T3 uses a triple-smoothing process and a volume factor that allows it to follow price trends more closely with significantly less overshoot and lag than a standard EMA.
How can I use the Factor setting? The Factor setting allows you to fine-tune the "speed" of the indicator. A value closer to 1 will react faster to price movements, while a lower value will provide a smoother, more filtered output.
