OBV MACD Indicator
Nov 10, 2019

The OBV MACD Indicator tool provides a responsive momentum oscillator that integrates On-Balance Volume (OBV) data with advanced moving average filtering to identify trend shifts with reduced lag. By processing volume-weighted price data through various smoothing techniques, it offers a more nuanced view of market momentum compared to the standard MACD.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used, examples should be provided in this section. This tool functions as a trend-following oscillator where crossovers and slope changes indicate potential entries or exits.
- Trend Identification: Users can monitor the color-coded signal line; green indicates bullish momentum while red indicates bearish momentum.
- Signal Crosses: When the
Show Signaloption is enabled, the indicator plots crosses at the points where momentum shifts, serving as potential trade triggers. - Pivot Detection: The indicator identifies local highs and lows within the oscillator's movement, labeled as "Pivots." These can be used to spot potential exhaustion points or reversals in volume-driven momentum.
- Volume-Price Correlation: Because the script uses OBV as its primary source, it is particularly effective in identifying whether price movement is supported by significant volume.
Details
The OBV MACD Indicator departs from the traditional MACD calculation by substituting standard price inputs with a volume-adjusted source.
- OBV Integration: It calculates a custom On-Balance Volume (OBV) derivative that accounts for price spreads and volume deviations, creating a "shadow" price that reflects volume pressure.
- Moving Average Flexibility: The script allows for various smoothing methods, including DEMA, TEMA, and Zero-Lag variations. These methods are applied to the OBV-based source to minimize the inherent lag found in traditional exponential moving averages.
- Linear Slope Calculation: To sharpen the signal, the tool employs a linear regression slope calculation (based on Alex Grover's methodology). This transforms the filtered OBV data into a linear form that reacts more quickly to price changes.
- T-Channels & Pivots: The final signal is processed through a trailing channel mechanism to determine bullish or bearish states (the
b5line) and identify pivot points based on historical lookback periods.
Settings
- OBV Length: Determines the lookback period for the initial On-Balance Volume smoothing.
- MA Type: Selects the smoothing algorithm used for the calculation (options include EMA, DEMA, TEMA, ZLEMA, HMA, NMA, etc.).
- MA Length: The period applied to the selected Moving Average type.
- MACD Slow Length: The length of the slow EMA used as the baseline for the MACD calculation.
- Slope Length: The lookback period used for the linear regression slope calculation to sharpen signals.
- Show Signal: Toggles the visibility of cross icons on momentum shifts.
- Hide pivots?: When unchecked, the indicator displays "Pivot" labels on the oscillator's local peaks and troughs.
- Period: The lookback window used specifically for identifying pivot points.
FAQ
How do I interpret the color changes in the indicator? The main signal line changes color based on momentum direction. A green line signifies increasing bullish volume pressure, while a red line signifies increasing bearish volume pressure.
Why does the indicator not show any data on my chart? The OBV MACD Indicator relies heavily on volume data. If you are viewing a symbol or an exchange that does not provide volume information (such as some Forex pairs or certain indices), the indicator will not be able to perform its calculations.
How can I access the OBV MACD Indicator? You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.
