Adaptive Modern RSI
May 19, 2026

The Adaptive Modern RSI indicator provides a self-tuning Relative Strength Index that automatically optimizes its period, smoothing, and threshold levels based on recent market conditions. It dynamically shifts parameters to account for modern volatility and 24/7 trading environments, moving beyond the static defaults of traditional RSI implementations.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to navigate different market environments. The indicator tests 60 parameter combinations on every bar (5 RSI periods, 3 smoother strengths, and 4 threshold pairs) and selects the best-performing set over a 300-bar lookback.
Market Regimes
The indicator identifies five distinct market regimes to guide interpretation:
- Mean-Reverting Chop: Characterized by fast reversals at extremes. RSI signals are highly reliable here.
- Quiet Range: Mild swings with modest signals; primarily used for light confluence.
- Trending: Classic mean-reversion logic is inverted. Use oversold signals for pullback entries in an uptrend and overbought signals for bounce shorts in a downtrend.
- Noisy Transition: Indicates a lack of stable market structure. It is often best to wait for clarity.
- Adapting: Occurs when the script is warming up on a new chart or timeframe.
Visual Elements
- The Aqua Line: Represents the active RSI using the current optimized period and smoothing settings.
- Horizontal Lines: Adaptive overbought (red) and oversold (green) levels that shift as market "extremes" change.
- Triangles: Red triangles trigger when the RSI rolls over from overbought, while green triangles fire when entering oversold territory. Signals fire on bar close and do not repaint.
- Status Label: Displays the current regime and the duration (in bars) it has been held.
Details
The script utilizes a SuperSmoother filter to reduce noise while maintaining responsiveness. Unlike traditional RSI, which uses fixed 70/30 levels, this tool evaluates the forward-return payoff of potential signals over a user-defined horizon. By measuring how various parameter sets would have performed over the last few hundred bars, it ensures the current settings are grounded in recent price action rather than historical defaults.
Settings
Adaptation
- Optimization Lookback (bars): The window used for parameter search. Shorter windows adapt faster but increase jitter; longer windows are more stable but slower to react to regime shifts.
- Forward-return Eval Horizon: The number of bars forward the optimizer measures trigger payoffs to determine the "winning" parameter set.
- Switch Margin (%): The percentage by which a new parameter set must outperform the current one to trigger a change, preventing excessive jumping.
- Min Triggers Required: The minimum number of signals a candidate must have produced in the lookback period to be considered.
Regime Label
- Show Regime Label: Toggles the visibility of the status label on the chart.
- Regime Label Size: Adjusts the text size for visibility.
- Min Bars to Confirm Regime Change: A hysteresis setting that requires a new regime to hold for a specific duration before the label updates.
Display
- Show Adaptive OS/OB Lines: Toggles the visibility of the dynamic overbought and oversold levels.
FAQ
How do I interpret the "held N bars" counter?
This counter tracks the stability of the current market regime. A regime held for a high number of bars (e.g., 200+) indicates high confidence, while a fresh regime (e.g., 5 bars) should be weighted more lightly.
What assets does this work on?
The logic is asset-agnostic and has been tested on Crypto, Forex, Indices, and Gold. It automatically tunes its parameters to the specific volatility of the asset provided.
