This unique trading indicator offers insights into the relationship between price and simple moving averages (SMA). It does so by providing two key outputs: the percentage or count of price points greater than SMAs within user-defined periods, and the moving average period closest to the current price. This feature makes it a versatile tool for traders aiming to gauge market trends and potential reversals accurately.
Key Settings for the Indicator
- Minimum Length: Defines the shortest SMA period to consider.
- Maximum Length: Maximum period for SMAs under analysis.
- Smooth: Adjusts the smoothness of the indicator outputs, tailoring them to trader preferences.
- Normalized: When selected, this feature normalizes outputs within a 0-100 range, converting counts to percentages for enhanced interpretability.
- Src: Sets the input source from which the indicator will calculate its data.
How to Trade with the Price Above MA's and Proximity Index?
The indicator is equipped with two distinct outputs that serve different strategic purposes:
Price Above MA's Output
This output reflects how often the current price stays above SMAs with periods between the specified Minimum Length and Maximum Length. When the Normalized option is activated, this value is expressed as a percentage, offering an intuitive measure of trend strength.
The oscillator serves as a trend direction identifier. Longer SMA settings (Minimum Length and Maximum Length) provide insights into long-term price movements, while shorter ranges provide detailed insights into more immediate trends. The chart demonstrates the utility of settings at Minimum Length = 80 to Maximum Length = 100 for longer-term analysis.
Proximity Index Output
Conversely, the Proximity Index highlights the moving average period closest to the current price, offering a cue on potential trend reversals rather than direction.
Observing various SMAs of different periods, shorter-period SMAs remain closer to the current price. However, during price reversals, prices gravitate toward longer-term moving averages.
Thus, the Proximity Index is crucial for detecting the evolution of new trends. Higher Proximity Index values suggest prices are reverting towards longer-term SMAs, signaling potential new trend formations.
