The OHLC Moving Average indicator provides a comprehensive view of price action by simultaneously plotting four moving averages for Open, High, Low, and Close values to help traders identify trend direction and potential support or resistance zones.

Usage

The Usage of the OHLC Moving Average involves monitoring the four distinct lines to gauge the range and momentum of price action. Traders often use this tool to visualize the "channel" created by the high and low moving averages, which can act as dynamic support and resistance.

A common application is to apply two instances of the indicator to a single chart. For example, one set can be set to the current timeframe to track immediate price movement, while a second set (often colored differently) can be applied to a higher timeframe. This configuration helps in identifying broader market trends and significant zones where price may react.

The indicator also includes visual cues: the moving averages change color based on the relationship between current and previous values. If all four averages are increasing, the indicator reflects a bullish state, whereas if all four are decreasing, it reflects a bearish state.

Details

The OHLC Moving Average is constructed by calculating either a Simple Moving Average (SMA) or an Exponential Moving Average (EMA) for each of the four price components (Open, High, Low, Close) over a user-defined length.

The script includes specific logic to determine trend states:

  • Bullish State: Occurs when the current values of the Open, High, Low, and Close moving averages are all higher than their respective values from the previous bar.
  • Bearish State: Occurs when all four moving average values are lower than their respective values from the previous bar.

Visually, the tool utilizes a fill between the High and Low moving averages to create a price ribbon. It also features a gradation option that applies a gradient effect within this ribbon to highlight the strength and direction of the trend. This indicator was originally developed by @FX365_Thailand.

Settings

  • Length: Determines the lookback period used for calculating the moving averages.
  • MA Type: Allows the user to select between Simple Moving Average (SMA) and Exponential Moving Average (EMA).
  • Offset: Shifts the moving average plots forward or backward in time.
  • Fill MA: Toggles the background fill between the High and Low moving average lines.
  • Gradation: Enables or disables a gradient color effect within the moving average channel.
  • MA Color Change: When enabled, the plot colors will dynamically update to green during bullish trends and red during bearish trends.

FAQ

How can I identify a trend reversal with this indicator? A trend reversal is typically signaled when the moving averages change color. For example, a shift from red to green indicates that all four OHLC averages have begun moving upward simultaneously.

What is the benefit of using the High and Low moving averages together? By plotting both High and Low averages, the indicator creates a "volatility channel" or ribbon. This area often acts as a zone of support during uptrends and resistance during downtrends, providing more context than a single closing price moving average.
