CM_Laguerre PPO PercentileRank Mkt Tops & Bottoms
Nov 3, 2014

The CM_Laguerre PPO PercentileRank Mkt Tops & Bottoms indicator utilizes a Laguerre-filtered Percentage Price Oscillator (PPO) combined with percentile ranking to identify potential overextended market levels. This tool provides a visual representation of price momentum relative to historical data to assist in pinpointing significant market peaks and troughs.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify trend exhaustion and potential reversals. The indicator appears as a histogram in a separate pane, oscillating around a zero line.
- Identifying Market Tops: When the upper histogram columns exceed the user-defined "Warning" or "Extreme" percentile thresholds, it indicates that upward momentum is historically overextended, signaling a potential market top.
- Identifying Market Bottoms: When the lower histogram columns drop below the negative "Warning" or "Extreme" thresholds, it suggests that downward momentum is overextended, signaling a potential market bottom.
- Color Coding: The histogram changes color based on the severity of the move. Gray/Silver columns represent normal market activity, while brighter colors (typically red for tops and green for bottoms) highlight when percentile thresholds are breached.
Details
The script is built upon the Laguerre PPO, originally developed by TheLark. Unlike a standard PPO which uses simple or exponential moving averages, the Laguerre-based version uses four-stage Laguerre filters to provide a smoother output with less lag.
The indicator calculates two PPO values: one optimized for tops and one for bottoms. It then applies the ta.percentrank function over a specified lookback period (defaulting to 200 bars). This calculation determines where the current PPO value stands relative to all other values in that window. By converting the oscillator into a percentile (0-100% for tops and 0 to -100% for bottoms), traders can objectively identify "extreme" readings based on historical frequency rather than fixed oscillator levels.
Settings
- Percentile Threshold Extreme Value: Sets the level (e.g., 90) at which the histogram indicates an extreme overextension.
- Percentile Threshold Warning Value: Sets a lower threshold (e.g., 70) to provide an early warning of momentum buildup.
- PPO Setting Short: Controls the gamma coefficient for the short-term Laguerre filter.
- PPO Setting Long: Controls the gamma coefficient for the long-term Laguerre filter.
- Look Back Period For 'Tops': The number of bars used to calculate the percentile rank for upward moves.
- Look Back Period For 'Bottoms': The number of bars used to calculate the percentile rank for downward moves.
- Show Threshold Line?: Toggles the visibility of the extreme percentile level lines.
- Show Warning Threshold Line?: Toggles the visibility of the warning percentile level lines.
FAQ
How do I interpret the histogram colors? The colors change from neutral (gray) to warning and then extreme shades as the percentile rank crosses the specified threshold values, helping you visually identify exhaustion zones.
Can I use this indicator on any timeframe? Yes, the percentile rank adapts to the historical volatility of the specific timeframe and asset you are viewing, though the lookback period may need adjustment for very short or very long timeframes.
