BB+RSI+EMA BUY/SELL Signals
Nov 5, 2021

The BB+RSI+EMA BUY/SELL Signals indicator provides a comprehensive trend-following signal system based on Bollinger Bands, Relative Strength Index (RSI), and Exponential Moving Averages (EMA). It identifies potential trade entries by combining price interactions with volatility bands, momentum oversold/overbought conditions, and a 200-period EMA trend filter.
Usage
The Usage section focuses on interpreting the three distinct tiers of signals provided by the indicator. These signals are categorized by strength to help traders differentiate between minor pullbacks and significant trend reversals.
- Weak Signals: Represented by small circles. These indicate early price exhaustion where the price touches a Bollinger Band and RSI is at a moderate level.
- Normal Signals: Represented by triangles with "BUY" or "SELL" text. These occur when price penetrates the bands more deeply with stronger RSI confirmation.
- Strong Signals: Represented by labels with "STRONG BUY" or "STRONG SELL" text. These are high-conviction setups where price action and momentum are significantly extended while remaining aligned with (or deviating from) the long-term trend filter.
Traders can use these signals as entry triggers or as a multi-stage scaling system. For instance, a trader might enter a partial position on a normal signal and add to it if a strong signal appears.
Details
The script integrates three core technical analysis concepts:
- Trend Filtering: A 200-period EMA acts as the primary trend filter. By default, the script highlights the EMA in green when price is above and red when below, helping traders stay on the right side of the major trend.
- Volatility Anchoring: Bollinger Bands are used to identify price extremes. Signals are triggered when candles touch or close outside the upper or lower bands.
- Momentum Confirmation: The RSI filter ensures that signals only trigger when the market is sufficiently overbought or oversold. The indicator includes various RSI presets (Low, Basic, High) to adjust the sensitivity of these triggers.
Settings
EMA
- Length: Sets the period for the Exponential Moving Average (default is 200).
- Source: Determines the price data used for EMA calculation.
- Added EMA filter: When enabled, applies a stricter mathematical filter based on the average of candle extremes relative to the EMA.
BB
- Length: Sets the period for the Bollinger Bands calculation.
- Source: Determines the price data used for the bands.
- Multiplier: Adjusts the standard deviation for the width of the bands.
RSI
- Length: Sets the period for the Relative Strength Index.
- Source: Determines the price data used for RSI.
- Oversold/Overbought Presets: Allows users to choose between "low", "basic", and "high" thresholds to define momentum extremes.
General
- Use Heikin Ashi Candles: If enabled, the indicator performs all internal calculations using Heikin Ashi price data, which can result in smoother signal generation.
FAQ
How do I interpret the different signal shapes?
Circles represent weak signals, triangles represent normal signals, and labels represent strong signals. The larger the visual marker, the more criteria the setup has met according to the underlying BB and RSI logic.
Can I use this for Short signals?
Yes, while the original logic emphasizes trend-following, the script provides Sell signals (red markers) which can be used to exit Long positions or identify potential Short entries depending on your strategy.
