Moving Averages

The Three Moving Averages indicator plots three independent exponential moving averages on a single chart to help traders identify trend direction, momentum, and potential crossover signals while optimizing indicator slots.

Usage

The Usage of this tool centers on trend analysis and the identification of dynamic support and resistance levels. By default, the script provides three EMAs which can be configured for short-term, medium-term, and long-term analysis (e.g., 50, 100, and 200 periods).

  • Trend Identification: When the shorter-term MA is above the longer-term MAs, it indicates a bullish trend. Conversely, when the shorter-term MA is below the longer-term ones, it suggests a bearish trend.
  • Crossover Signals: The indicator includes built-in logic to detect when the first MA crosses the second, or the second crosses the third. These "Golden Cross" or "Death Cross" variations are often used to signal entry or exit points.
  • Visibility Toggles: If a strategy only requires two moving averages, users can disable the second or third MA via the settings menu to declutter the workspace.

Details

The script utilizes the Exponential Moving Average (EMA) calculation, which places a greater weight and significance on the most recent data points. This makes the lines more responsive to recent price fluctuations compared to Simple Moving Averages (SMA).

A key technical feature of this script is the consolidation of three separate calculations into one indicator ID. This is particularly useful for users on charting platform tiers that limit the number of active indicators allowed on a single layout. Additionally, the script includes alert conditions optimized for the "Once Per Bar Close" frequency, ensuring that crossover signals are confirmed by price action before an alert is triggered.

Settings

  • Enable 2nd MA: Toggles the visibility and calculation of the second moving average.
  • Enable 3rd MA: Toggles the visibility and calculation of the third moving average.
  • Length / Length2 / Length3: Sets the lookback period for the first, second, and third moving averages respectively.
  • Source / Source2 / Source3: Determines the price data used for each calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low, or HL2).
