Moving Averages

The NSDT MTF Moving Average indicator provides a multi-timeframe analysis tool that plots two moving averages from different user-defined timeframes onto a single price chart.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on how to leverage multi-timeframe data to identify trends and momentum shifts across different periodicities without switching chart views.

Users can define two distinct timeframes (Short and Long) to be displayed simultaneously. This is particularly useful for traders who want to maintain a "bird's eye view" of the market while executing trades on a lower timeframe.

Example: A trader viewing a 5-minute chart can overlay a 1-minute EMA to capture micro-trends and a 10-minute EMA to identify the broader trend direction.

The interpretation of the indicator typically follows standard moving average logic:

  • Trend Identification: When price is above both the Short and Long MAs, the trend is considered bullish across those timeframes.
  • Momentum Shifts: A crossover of the Short MA above the Long MA indicates potential upward momentum, while a crossunder suggests downward momentum.

Details

The script utilizes the request.security function to retrieve price data from timeframes other than the one currently active on the chart. It centralizes the calculation logic into a single function, allowing the user to switch between three different moving average types:

  1. EMA (Exponential Moving Average): Gives more weight to recent price data, making it more responsive to new information.
  2. SMA (Simple Moving Average): Calculates the average price over a specific period, providing a smoother, lagging trend line.
  3. WMA (Weighted Moving Average): Assigns a heavier weighting to more recent data points in a linear fashion.

The indicator includes built-in alert conditions for crossovers between the two multi-timeframe lines, enabling automated notifications for trend changes. This tool was originally conceptualized by NorthStarDayTrading.

Settings

  • MA Length: Determines the lookback period (number of bars) used for both moving average calculations.
  • MA Source: Specifies the price input used for the calculation (e.g., Close, Open, High, Low).
  • Short MA Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for the first moving average plot (plotted as a thin line).
  • Long MA Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for the second moving average plot (plotted as a thick line).
  • MA Type: A dropdown menu to select between EMA, SMA, or WMA calculation methods.
