The BEST Supertrend CCI indicator utilizes the Commodity Channel Index (CCI) to trigger trend shifts, providing a momentum-based alternative to the standard price-action Supertrend for identifying trailing stop-loss levels and trend direction.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market momentum and potential exit points. Unlike the traditional Supertrend, which relies on price crossing the trailing stop level, this script changes direction based on the CCI’s relationship with its midline.

  • Trend Identification: When the CCI crosses above the defined midline (default is 0), the indicator identifies a bullish trend and plots a support line below the price. Conversely, when the CCI crosses below the midline, a bearish trend is identified, and a resistance line is plotted above the price.
  • Trailing Stop-Loss: Traders can use the plotted line as a dynamic stop-loss. Because the calculation incorporates the Average True Range (ATR), the line adjusts based on market volatility.
  • Momentum Filtering: By using CCI as the trigger, the indicator filters out minor price fluctuations that might prematurely flip a standard Supertrend, focusing instead on cyclical momentum shifts.

Details

The BEST Supertrend CCI reframes the classical Supertrend logic by decoupling the trend trigger from price action and attaching it to the Commodity Channel Index.

The core logic follows these rules:

  1. Trend Trigger: A bullish event is recorded when the CCI crosses over the Mid Line Pivot. A bearish event is recorded when it crosses below.
  2. Line Calculation:
    • The Upper Band (Support) is calculated as: HL2 - (Factor * ATR)
    • The Lower Band (Resistance) is calculated as: HL2 + (Factor * ATR)
  3. Persistence: The script uses a logic gate where the bullish level can only move up and the bearish level can only move down until a trend reversal is triggered by the CCI value. This ensures the trailing stop remains protective and does not widen during the duration of a single trend.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the CCI calculation (default is Close).
  • CCI Period: Sets the lookback length for the Commodity Channel Index calculation.
  • CCI Mid Line pivot: Defines the threshold level for trend changes. While typically set to 0, it can be adjusted to favor specific momentum strengths.
  • [ST] Factor: A multiplier that determines how far the trailing stop line is placed from the price based on volatility.
  • [ST] PD: The lookback period for the Average True Range (ATR) used in the volatility calculation.

FAQ

How do I access the BEST Supertrend CCI?

You can get access on the LuxAlgo Library for charting platforms like TradingView, MetaTrader (MT4/MT5), and NinjaTrader for free.

How does this differ from a standard Supertrend?

A standard Supertrend changes direction when the price crosses the trailing stop line. This version changes direction when the CCI crosses a specific midline, regardless of whether the price has touched the trailing stop line.

Can I change the sensitivity of the trend signals?

Yes, you can increase the CCI Period to make the trend signals more lagging but stable, or decrease the [ST] Factor to bring the trailing stop line closer to the current price.
