The ElliotWave Oscillator [EWO] indicator is a momentum-based tool designed to help traders identify Elliott Wave patterns by measuring the difference between a short-term and long-term exponential moving average. By highlighting shifts in price velocity, it assists in distinguishing between impulsive waves and corrective phases within a market cycle.

Usage

The Usage section focuses on identifying specific wave characteristics based on the oscillator's position and magnitude:

  • Wave 3 Identification: Historically, the highest (in uptrends) or lowest (in downtrends) oscillator values typically correspond with the third wave, which represents the strongest part of the trend.
  • Waves 1 and 5: These waves often show lower positive values compared to Wave 3 in a bullish sequence, or smaller negative values in a bearish sequence.
  • Corrective Phases: Negative values often emerge during significant downward corrections or during bearish impulse waves.
  • Zero-Line Crosses: Traders often monitor the oscillator crossing the zero line as a signal of shifting momentum. A cross above zero indicates burgeoning bullish momentum, while a cross below zero suggests increasing bearish pressure.

Details

The ElliotWave Oscillator is constructed using the difference between a 5-period Exponential Moving Average (EMA) and a 35-period EMA. This specific configuration is a classic standard in Elliott Wave analysis, intended to filter out market noise while capturing the underlying trend acceleration.

The visual output is rendered as a histogram. The colors of the columns change based on the oscillator's position relative to the zero line, providing an immediate visual cue for trend direction. This refactored version includes optimized alert conditions for zero-line crossovers to assist in real-time monitoring.

Settings

  • Indicator Title: The name displayed on the chart (Elliot Wave Oscillator [LazyBear]).
  • Short Title: The abbreviated name used in the data window (EWO_LB).
  • Price Source: By default, the calculation uses the closing price of the bars to determine the EMA values.

FAQ

How do I interpret the peaks in the ElliotWave Oscillator?

The strongest peaks or troughs in the histogram typically signify the peak momentum of a Wave 3. If price makes a new high but the oscillator makes a lower high, it may indicate a Wave 5 is forming, suggesting a potential trend exhaustion.

What do the different colors in the histogram represent?

Green columns indicate that the oscillator value is above zero, reflecting bullish momentum. Red columns indicate the oscillator is below zero, reflecting bearish momentum or corrective phases.
