The Kalman Flow Trail indicator is an adaptive trend-following and market structure overlay designed to help traders identify directional flow, structural shifts, and protected levels through noise-filtering Kalman smoothing. It provides a comprehensive view of market conditions by combining adaptive trailing logic with live supply/demand zones and higher-timeframe alignment.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to interpret market trends and structural targets.

Trend and Flow Tracking

The primary use of the indicator is to track the "Flow Trail." When the trail is colored bullishly, price action is considered in a positive flow state; conversely, a bearish color indicates negative flow. The "Trail Flip" diamond markers highlight points where this directional bias shifts.

Market Structure (MSS/MSB)

The script identifies internal market structure shifts (MSS) and market structure breaks (MSB).

  • MSS: Indicates a potential early change in trend direction.
  • MSB: Indicates a continuation of the established trend. Traders can use these to confirm entries or identify structural invalidation points.

Strong and Weak Range Levels

The tool identifies "Strong" protected levels (swing points that should hold in a healthy trend) and "Weak" target levels (liquidity objectives).

  • In a bullish trend, the swing low is marked as "Strong" (protected), while the swing high is "Weak" (the target).
  • When a weak target is breached, the level rolls forward until a new confirmed pivot forms, allowing for dynamic target mapping.

POI Supply & Demand Zones

The script automatically generates Points of Interest (POI) boxes.

  • Demand Zones: Formed around strong lows in bullish ranges.
  • Supply Zones: Formed around strong highs in bearish ranges. These zones serve as areas of interest for potential reactions, pullbacks, or trend continuations.

Details

The script utilizes a dual Kalman smoothing engine. Unlike standard moving averages that use fixed lookback periods, this engine adapts its sensitivity based on volatility and market structure activity. When market activity increases, the trail reacts faster; during consolidation, it smooths out to prevent whipsaws.

The internal logic incorporates a "structure-bias filter," which ensures the Kalman momentum aligns with price action before confirming a trend shift. The "Proximity Star" feature provides a real-time visual warning when price approaches the trail, indicating a potential mean-reversion or breach.

Settings

Kalman Engine

  • Fast Kalman Length: Adjusts the responsiveness of the primary trail. Lower values react quicker to price changes.
  • Slow Kalman Length: Sets the smoothing factor for the secondary confirmation engine. Higher values filter more noise.

Trail Visuals

  • Show Kalman Trail/Basis: Toggles the visibility of the primary and secondary flow lines.
  • Trail Boundary Multiplier: Adjusts the width of the visual bands surrounding the trail.
  • Use Kalman Slope Confirmation: When enabled, requires the slope of the Kalman engine to align with the trend direction for color shifts.
  • Trail Proximity Warning ATR: Defines the distance (in ATR) at which the Live Trail Star changes color to warn of a potential touch.

MSS / MSB Guides

  • MSS / MSB Lines & Tags: Toggles the display of structural break levels and their respective labels.
  • Bullish/Bearish Color: Customizes the colors for structural breaks.

Live Range Visuals

  • Strong / Weak Lines & Tags: Toggles the visibility of protected levels and liquidity targets.
  • Show POI Zones: Enables the drawing of Supply and Demand boxes based on structural pivots.
  • POI Transparency: Controls the opacity of the Supply/Demand boxes.

HTF Confirmation

  • Show HTF Kalman Basis: Displays a smoothed Kalman line from a higher timeframe for trend alignment.
  • HTF Timeframe: Selects the timeframe used for the HTF Basis (e.g., 60-minute basis on a 5-minute chart).

FAQ

How do I interpret the Flow Dashboard? The Flow Dashboard summarizes four key metrics: Trail Direction, Kalman Momentum, HTF Alignment, and Range State. High-probability conditions typically occur when all four elements show the same directional bias.

What is the difference between a Strong and Weak level? A Strong level represents the protected side of the current trading range (e.g., the low in a bullish trend), while a Weak level represents the side of the range likely to be hunted for liquidity (the high in a bullish trend).
