Multi SMA EMA WMA HMA BB (5+5 MAs + Bollinger Bands) MTF by RRB
Sep 4, 2018

The Multi SMA EMA WMA HMA BB indicator provides a comprehensive multi-timeframe toolkit featuring two groups of five moving averages and integrated Bollinger Bands to identify dynamic support/resistance and trend shifts.
Usage
The Usage section describes how the script can be used to monitor multiple trend layers simultaneously. Traders can utilize the indicator to spot "Golden Crosses" or "Death Crosses" across different timeframes and asset classes.
- Trend Identification: Use the two MA groups (labeled EMAs and SMAs) to create short-term and long-term trend ribbons.
- Multi-Timeframe Analysis: By setting a custom timeframe (e.g., Daily) while viewing a lower timeframe (e.g., H1), you can see higher-period trend direction without switching charts.
- Volatility Tracking: The integrated Bollinger Bands provide context for price expansion and mean reversion relative to the selected moving average type.
- Dynamic S/R: Use higher timeframe MAs (like the 200 SMA) as significant dynamic support or resistance levels for entry and exit signals.
Details
The script is built to handle complex multi-timeframe (MTF) logic while maintaining visual clarity. It organizes moving averages into two distinct groups, plus a third group for Bollinger Bands.
- Smoothing Algorithm: To solve the "stair-stepping" effect common in MTF indicators, the script applies Point Density/Step Line smoothing. This creates smoother transitions when viewing a higher timeframe line on a lower timeframe chart.
- MA Versatility: Unlike standard indicators, this tool allows users to apply various types (SMA, EMA, WMA, HMA, ALMA, etc.) to the groups. For instance, the "EMA" group can be globally changed to use the Hull Moving Average (HMA) calculation.
- Calculation Logic: The Bollinger Bands can also be customized with different MA types and can be set to a custom timeframe independently of the moving average groups.
Settings
General Settings
- Show Groups: Toggle visibility for the EMA group, SMA group, and Bollinger Bands.
- Source: Determines the price data used for calculations (default is Close).
EMA/SMA Group Settings
- Timeframe: Sets the specific timeframe for the group (leave empty for current).
- MA Type: Selects the calculation method (SMA, EMA, WMA, SWMA, VWMA, HMA, ALMA, RMA, Linreg).
- Lengths (1-5): Individual length inputs for each of the five moving averages in the group. Setting a length to 0 hides that specific line.
Bollinger Bands Settings
- BB Timeframe: Sets the timeframe for the Bollinger Band calculation.
- BB MA Type: Determines the basis for the BB median line.
- BB Length: The lookback period for the median line and standard deviation.
- BB Standard Deviation: Adjusts the width of the outer bands.
Smoothing Settings
- Apply MA X Smoothing only for TFs Lower Than: Restricts smoothing logic to specific timeframe hierarchies.
- Point Density/Step Line Smoothing: Controls the horizontal and vertical smoothing intensity to reduce stair-stepping.
FAQ
How do I hide a specific moving average without turning off the whole group? You can either set the length of that specific MA to 0 in the settings menu or uncheck its visibility in the "Style" tab.
Why do the MTF lines look like stairs? This happens when smoothing is disabled (set to 0). It represents the exact value of the higher timeframe at each lower timeframe bar. You can adjust the "Point Density" settings to smooth these lines.
