Three White Soldiers
By LuxAlgoJul 10, 2026
Three White Soldiers is an indicator on Vela, our next-generation charting platform, written in Pine Script®.
The Three White Soldiers indicator identifies a classic bullish reversal pattern characterized by three consecutive long-bodied candles that close progressively higher. By filtering out market noise and enforcing structural requirements, this tool provides traders with objective entry, stop, and target levels. The indicator adds significant value by quantifying market context and identifying potential trap patterns, such as advance blocks or stalled sessions, which often precede trend exhaustion rather than a sustained move.
How to Trade the Three White Soldiers?
The primary objective of this indicator is to locate high-conviction bullish reversals following a period of decline. When the pattern is confirmed, traders can approach the market using the predefined levels provided on the chart:
- Entry Strategy: Traders can choose between entering on the completion of the third soldier or waiting for a pullback. Using the Pattern Midpoint or the First Soldier Close as an entry point often improves the risk-reward ratio, though it carries the risk of missing a runaway trend.
- Risk Management: The stop level is automatically set at the lowest point of the three-candle formation. The target is calculated based on the chosen R-multiple.
- Reading Warnings: Pay close attention to labels marked "AB" (Advance Block) or "ST" (Stalled). These indicate that despite rising prices, the momentum is failing due to shrinking candle bodies or excessive upper shadows. These signals are meant to warn against entering long positions, as they suggest the buyers are losing control.
Three White Soldiers Settings
Soldier Rules
- Body Average Length: The number of bars used to calculate the average real body, serving as the baseline for identifying "long" candles.
- Long Body Multiplier: Sets the minimum size requirement for a candle to be considered a "soldier."
- Upper Shadow Tolerance %: Controls how much of the candle can be an upper wick, ensuring the price closes near the high.
- Open Gap Tolerance %: Determines the allowable gap between a soldier's open and the previous candle's close.
- Body Similarity %: Ensures that the three candles in the sequence are of comparable size, confirming steady accumulation.
Context & Quality
- Require Prior Decline: Filters the pattern to ensure it only fires after a recognized dip, preventing false signals during existing uptrends.
- Decline Test: Allows users to define what constitutes a decline, choosing between simple moving averages or net price changes.
- Swing Length: Sets the lookback period to confirm swing highs, validating the breakout structure.
- Extension Threshold (ATR): Flags the setup as "Extended" if the price movement exceeds a specific ATR value, warning of potential overextension.
Trade Plan
- Entry Level: Defines the trigger point for the long position (Midpoint, First Close, or Third Close).
- Target (R): The reward multiplier used to define the profit objective relative to the risk taken.
- Maximum Hold: Limits the number of bars a trade is tracked before it is automatically closed as a "Timed Out" entry.
