The Ehlers Instantaneous Trend indicator identifies the prevailing market trend by removing cyclic components from price action to provide a smoother, low-lag trendline. It serves as a robust alternative to moving averages, helping traders distinguish between trending phases and market noise.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used, particularly in identifying trend reversals and momentum shifts. Traders typically look for the interaction between the Instantaneous Trend (ITrend) line and its corresponding trigger (Lag) line.

  • Trend Identification: When the ITrend line is above the Lag line, the market is generally considered to be in a bearish phase. Conversely, when the ITrend line is below the Lag line, the market is in a bullish phase.
  • Crossovers: Crossovers between the ITrend and Lag lines can signal potential entry or exit points. A Lag line crossing above the ITrend line suggests an upward momentum shift.
  • Visual Analysis: The indicator can be rendered as a ribbon or used to color price bars, providing an immediate visual representation of the current trend state without cluttering the chart.

Details

The Ehlers Instantaneous Trendline was developed by John Ehlers and is based on the concept of eliminating cycle components to isolate the underlying trend. Unlike standard moving averages that often suffer from significant lag, this algorithm uses a specific transfer function to provide a "zero-lag" response to trend changes while maintaining smoothness.

The calculation utilizes an Alpha ($\alpha$) parameter to determine the weighting of recent price data. By subtracting the dominant cycle from the price series, the remaining component represents the instantaneous trend. This specific implementation is derived from Ehlers' early technical presentations on signal processing in financial markets.

Settings

  • Source: Determines the price data used for the calculation (default is HL2).
  • Alpha: Controls the smoothing factor of the trendline. Lower values result in a smoother line with more lag, while higher values make the line more reactive to price changes.
  • Fill Trend Region: When enabled, shades the area between the Trend and Lag lines to create a visual ribbon.
  • Enable barcolors: Toggles the coloring of price bars based on the current trend direction.
  • Hide Ribbon: Allows the user to hide the trend lines from the chart while potentially keeping other features like bar coloring active.

FAQ

How do I interpret the ribbon colors? The ribbon changes color based on the relationship between the Trend and Lag lines. Typically, one color represents a bullish crossover while the other represents a bearish crossover, allowing for quick trend assessment.

What is the advantage of ITrend over a simple moving average? The ITrend is designed to be more responsive to price shifts by filtering out cyclical noise, whereas simple moving averages often lag significantly behind price during rapid trend changes.
