What are Gann Time Cycles and Anniversaries?

Gann time cycles and anniversaries are the time-based side of W.D. Gann's methodology: projecting future turning-point dates from the dates of past major highs and lows. The two main devices are anniversary dates, where a market is watched for a turn on or near the calendar date of a prior significant high or low in later years, and fixed counts, where a set of favored intervals such as 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 144, 180, and 360 units (days, weeks, or months) is projected forward from a swing date.

The premise is Gann's often-quoted view that time matters as much as price, and that markets have a tendency to turn when meaningful amounts of time have elapsed from prior turns. He also emphasized seasonal dates, the solstices and equinoxes that divide the year into quarters, and divisions of the year such as thirds and eighths. The time work is meant to be combined with his price tools, so a projected date carries more weight when it coincides with a level from the Square of 9 or an angle from a Gann fan.

The honest caveat is that the method generates many candidate dates. With multiple anchors, multiple counts, and a tolerance of a few bars around each projection, some hits are inevitable by chance, and rigorous hit-rate studies are scarce. Most practitioners therefore treat Gann dates as attention markers rather than signals: a reason to watch for reversal evidence in a window, not a reason to trade the date itself.

How to Mark Gann Time Projections on a Chart

The workflow is calendar arithmetic anchored to major swings:

  2. 2Mark the anniversary of each major turn in subsequent years, allowing a tolerance of a few trading days on either side.
