Wickless Candle Levels
Wickless Candle Levels, also known as no-wick levels, wickless candles, no-wick candles, are Support/Resistance & Levels concepts.
What are No-wick (Wickless) Candle Levels?
A no-wick candle level is the opening price of a candle that printed no wick on its open side: a bullish candle whose open is its low, or a bearish candle whose open is its high. Price left that open the moment the period began and never traded back to it, so the level is untested by construction. Traders mark it forward on the chart and watch for a return, expecting the revisit to bring a reaction (support at a bullish candle's open, resistance at a bearish one's) or at least a tag.
The idea comes from retail futures, forex and crypto scalping lore rather than from any book. Candlestick analysis calls the shape an opening marubozu, one side in control from the first print, and auction theory supplies the revisit intuition: an extreme that ends without excess, with no tail of rejected prices, is unfinished business, the reasoning behind poor highs and lows. A wickless open is the bar-chart version, an extreme with no trade beyond it at all.
The evidence is anecdotal: no published study shows that wickless opens are revisited more often, or react more strongly, than any other untested price. The definition is also data-sensitive, since whether a candle shows a wick at its open depends on the feed, the session boundaries and the tick size. On liquid low timeframes shaved opens print constantly, which is why implementations add a tolerance and a trend filter. Treat the levels as a map of untested opens, and let the behavior on the revisit do the work.
How to identify no-wick candle levels
The definition is an equality test, so most of the work is tolerance and bookkeeping.
- 1Scan for bullish candles whose low equals the open and bearish candles whose high equals the open. A candle with no wick only at its close end does not qualify; the level is always the open.
- 2Set a tolerance: exact equality is the strict form, while many traders accept a wick of a tick or two where single-tick noise is common.
- 3Extend the level right from the candle's open until price trades back to it; once touched it is spent, deleted or kept as a record.
- 4Weight by timeframe and company: a wickless daily or weekly open draws more attention than a one-minute one, more so when it coincides with a round number or a prior period level.
- 5Judge the revisit, not the touch: a fast rejection on the first tag supports the level, a slow grind through it says it was just a price.
How traders use it
- As revisit targets: untested wickless opens in the path of an existing move serve as objectives.
- As retest entries: a bullish candle's open is treated as potential support on the first return and a bearish candle's open as potential resistance, with the stop a set distance beyond, the playbook of any retest.
- With a trend filter: LuxAlgo's No-Wick Retest Levels plots the open of bullish candles with no lower wick and bearish candles with no upper wick, extends each until price taps it, and when a tap coincides with an agreeing one-minute EMA trend, frames a long or short with ATR-based target and stop boxes.
- As level hygiene: keeping only recent untested opens and retiring each on first touch is level freshness logic applied to a level that is zero-touch from birth.
No-wick levels vs related concepts
Marubozu: The marubozu is a candle pattern, read for conviction when it prints. No-wick levels take one part of it, the shaved open, and track that price forward; a closing marubozu with a lower shadow yields no level.
Poor High/poor Low: A poor extreme is a Market Profile judgment that a session high or low ended without excess and is likely to be repaired. A wickless open is the candle-chart cousin: an extreme with no trade beyond it, but without an auction framework behind the revisit expectation.
Level Interaction Rules: Interaction rules classify what price does at any level: rejection, break, retest, reclaim. A no-wick level is one more price to apply them to; the rules, not the level type, decide whether the revisit is a trade.
