The Consolidation Zones - Live indicator identifies and visualizes horizontal price ranges in real-time to help traders spot potential breakout opportunities and periods of market indecision.

Usage

The Usage section describes how the script can be used to identify market phases. Traders can use this tool to determine when price is range-bound and to prepare for potential expansion once a breakout occurs.

  • Identifying Ranges: When the market remains within a defined high and low for a specific duration, the script highlights the area.
  • Breakout Detection: The script tracks the boundaries of the consolidation; a move outside these bounds signifies a potential trend initiation.
  • Dynamic Extension: The zone automatically extends as long as the price remains within the established boundaries, providing a live view of the range's maturity.

Details

The script utilizes a lookback mechanism to identify local peaks and troughs which define the initial market direction. Once a baseline is established, the algorithm monitors price action to see if it remains within a specific vertical threshold for a minimum number of bars (defined by the user).

The logic follows these steps:

  1. Reference Points: It calculates the highest and lowest points over the "Loopback Period" to establish a directional bias.
  2. Consolidation Filtering: If price action maintains a consistent level without making new highs or lows for the "Min Consolidation Length," a zone is formed.
  3. Expansion: The zone boundaries adjust dynamically to include new candles that do not trigger a breakout.
  4. Termination: The consolidation phase ends when the price closes above the resistance line or below the support line of the zone.

Settings

  • Loopback Period: Sets the number of bars used to determine the initial highest and lowest reference points for the consolidation logic.
  • Min Consolidation Length: Defines the minimum number of bars required to confirm that a consolidation zone has formed.
  • Paint Consolidation Area: Toggles the background shading between the upper and lower bounds of the identified zone.
  • Zone Color: Customizes the color and transparency of the highlighted consolidation area.

FAQ

How do I adjust the indicator for different timeframes? For lower timeframes, you may want to increase the Min Consolidation Length to filter out noise, whereas on higher timeframes, a smaller value might be sufficient to catch significant ranges.

What triggers the breakout alerts? Alerts are triggered when the price breaks and closes above the resistance level or below the support level of an active consolidation zone.
