Ichimoku Signals

Ichimoku Signals, also known as TK cross, Kumo twist, Kumo breakout, flat Kijun/Senkou magnets, are Trend concepts.

What are Ichimoku Signals?

Ichimoku Signals are the named events traders take from the Ichimoku System's five lines. The core set: the TK cross (Tenkan-sen crossing Kijun-sen), the Kumo breakout (price closing through the cloud), the Kumo twist (Senkou Span A crossing Span B, flipping the projected cloud's coloring), and Chikou confirmation (the lagging span sitting clear of price from 26 bars back). Around these sit structural reads: flat Kijun or Senkou B segments that are treated as magnets for price, and cloud thickness as a gauge of how much support or resistance the cloud ahead should offer.

The system's convention is to grade each signal by where it fires relative to the cloud. A bullish TK cross above the cloud is graded strong, inside the cloud neutral, and below it weak, with the mirror grading for bearish crosses. Ichimoku was designed to be read as a whole: individual signals fire often, so practitioners typically demand confluence, for example a TK cross plus price on the right side of the cloud plus a clear Chikou, before treating a signal as actionable. The grades rank context; none of them are guarantees.

How to read Ichimoku Signals

Ichimoku signals are graded, not just spotted. A common reading order:

  1. 1Establish regime first: price above the cloud is bullish context, below it bearish, inside it neutral chop where most signals degrade.
  2. 2Take TK crosses next and grade them by location: crosses that fire on the trend side of the cloud are the strong form, while crosses inside or against the cloud are weaker.
  3. 3Read the projected cloud 26 bars ahead: an approaching twist marks a potential regime-change window, and a thin cloud there means little projected support or resistance to cross.
  4. 4Confirm with the Chikou span (clear of price counts as confirmation) and note any flat Kijun or Senkou B nearby, which are read as levels price tends to get pulled back toward.

Defaults 9, 26, 52 with the 26-bar displacement are Hosoda's originals; doubled settings such as 20, 60, 120 are common on 24-hour markets.

Every signal has a mirrored bearish form; TK crosses are graded by position relative to the cloud, and Chikou clearing the price of 26 bars ago is the usual confirmation filter.

A flat Kijun or flat SpanB marks the unchanged midpoint of its lookback range and is widely treated as a magnet that pulls price back toward it; a thicker Kumo implies stronger support or resistance.

How traders use it

  • For graded trend entries: taking only strong-form TK crosses, the ones that fire on the trend side of the cloud, and skipping neutral or counter-cloud crosses.
  • For regime-change trades: Kumo breakouts as trend entries with the far cloud edge as the invalidation reference; thin clouds are read as easier to break but also as offering less significance when broken.
  • For timing windows: Kumo twists mark points where the projected balance flips, so traders watch for reversals or accelerations to cluster around them rather than trading the twist alone.
  • For pullback mapping: flat Kijun or flat Senkou B segments (midpoints of stalled ranges) are read as magnets, giving pullback targets and re-entry zones inside an established trend.

What is the strongest Ichimoku signal?

By the standard grading, a TK cross that fires on the trend side of the cloud with the Chikou span clear and a supportive cloud ahead; a decisive Kumo breakout with all lines aligned is ranked similarly by many practitioners. Strong is a statement about context and confluence, not a win-rate promise: graded signals still fail, especially in ranging markets.

What does a Kumo twist mean?

A Kumo twist is Senkou Span A crossing Senkou Span B, flipping the projected cloud between bullish and bearish coloring. Because the cloud is plotted 26 bars forward, the twist marks a future window where the balance flips and the cloud is thinnest, so trend changes are watched for around it. It is context, not a standalone entry.

Why do flat Kijun and Senkou B lines attract price?

Both are midpoints of their lookback's high-low range (26 and 52 periods), so a flat segment means the range itself has not moved. The accepted reading is that price tends to rotate back toward such equilibrium midpoints after stretching away, which is why flats serve as pullback targets. It is a tendency traders plan around, not a law.
