What is TD D-Wave?

TD D-Wave is Tom DeMark's mechanical adaptation of Elliott Wave analysis. It labels the familiar wave structure of impulsive advances and corrective retreats, but assigns those labels through fixed, objective conditions instead of analyst judgment. Where two Elliott practitioners can produce different counts from the same chart, D-Wave's labels are generated by rule, so the count is reproducible.

What the study measures is position within trend structure: whether a market is in an early advance, a mature one, or a correction. That is different information from speed. Momentum tools such as RSI or MACD describe how fast price is moving right now; D-Wave describes where the current move sits inside a larger sequence, which shapes expectations about how much further it might carry.

Within the TD suite, D-Wave is the structural context layer. The exhaustion counts try to time a turn; D-Wave indicates whether that turn would end a minor correction or a major advance, which changes what a practitioner does with it.

Why there's no indicator for this

The conditions that begin, advance, cancel, and relabel waves are proprietary DeMark Analytics methodology. DeMark's published writing conveys the concept, but the specification as maintained today, the part that resolves the ambiguous cases where wave labeling actually gets hard, is licensed, and a faithful implementation requires authorization. That is why authentic D-Wave lives on licensee platforms such as Bloomberg and on Symbolik by DeMark.

Automated Elliott-style tools exist elsewhere, and they demonstrate both the demand for mechanical wave counting and its difficulty: each vendor encodes its own heuristics, and their counts routinely disagree. None of them is TD D-Wave, and an unlicensed script claiming to be cannot be checked against the real rules.

How traders use it

  • Regime framing: a dip labeled as a correction inside an ongoing advance is treated as a potential entry, while a similar dip after a mature, completed structure is treated as the possible start of something larger.
  • Tempering late entries: mature-wave labels caution against chasing breakouts that arrive late in a structure, a role similar to a persistently overbought reading but grounded in structure rather than stretch.
  • Confluence with exhaustion: an exhaustion count completing while D-Wave shows a mature structure, ideally with a regular divergence on a momentum oscillator, is the layered setup DeMark practitioners look for.
  • Auditing discretionary counts: Elliott-inclined traders use the mechanical labels to check their own preferred count for wishful thinking.
