Tape Reading
Tape Reading, also known as time & sales, speed of tape, large-lot filtering, is a Volume & Order Flow concept.
What is Tape Reading?
Tape reading is the practice of interpreting the stream of executed trades (time and sales) as they print: each entry shows price, size, and time, and most platforms infer from the prevailing quote whether the trade hit the bid or lifted the ask. The name survives from the ticker-tape era that began with the stock ticker's introduction in 1867, when traders such as Jesse Livermore and Richard Wyckoff inferred accumulation and distribution from prints alone; Wyckoff's 1910 classic Studies in Tape Reading appeared under the pen name Rollo Tape. The paper ribbon is gone, but the craft is unchanged: judging who is aggressive, how large, and how urgent.
Each print is one completed transaction, and its directional meaning comes from inference: a trade at or near the ask was very likely initiated by a buyer paying up, one at the bid by a seller hitting down. That aggressor inference is the raw material for volume delta and the delta profile, which are in effect automated tape summaries. The inference is imperfect, since midpoint executions and delayed reports blur it, which is one reason experienced readers treat the tape as evidence to weigh rather than a ledger of certainties.
Because algorithms slice large orders into small clips, modern tape readers lean on filters: showing only large-lot prints, tracking the speed of the tape (bursts of prints signal urgency), and always weighing prints against price response. Heavy selling on the tape that fails to push price lower is absorption; the tape shows the effort, and price shows the result.
Every volume tool on a chart is a compression of the tape. A volume profile shows where prints accumulated, OBV collapses direction into one running line, and relative volume compares today's activity against the norm. Reading the raw stream recovers what aggregation discards: sequence, urgency, and the size distribution. The cost is attention. The tape rewards screen time in liquid instruments and offers little in thin ones, where sparse prints carry more noise than signal.
How to read time and sales
Raw tape is unreadable without structure; readers impose it with filters and location.
- 1Configure the window: aggressor-side coloring on, and a minimum-size filter tuned to the instrument so routine small prints drop away.
- 2Anchor to a location that matters, such as a prior extreme, the session VWAP, or a value area boundary; tape watched cold, without context, is mostly noise.
- 3Establish the baseline pace, then watch for change: bursts of prints signal urgency and often precede the bar-level volume spike, while stalls signal disinterest.
- 4Weigh effort against result: persistent one-sided printing that cannot move price implies absorption on the other side, while easy movement on light prints implies a vacuum.
How traders use it
- Confirming activity at a level: when price reaches a zone a trader cares about, the tape shows whether buyers actually step in with size or the level is holding on thin prints.
- Reading aggression against the book: comparing executions with resting size on the depth-of-market ladder shows whether market orders are consuming liquidity faster than it refreshes.
- Filtering for institutional interest: repeated large-lot prints at one price or on one side hint at a bigger player working an order; negotiated block trades are the extreme case.
- Confirming breakouts at the moment of truth: the tape shows whether a level break is carried by broad, urgent buying or by a handful of prints into thin liquidity, a finer-grained read than bar-level volume at breakout.
- Spotting fading participation: new price highs printing on smaller, slower trades is the print-level counterpart of volume divergence, often visible before the bar-level version confirms.
Tape reading vs aggregated volume tools
Volume Delta: Delta automates the tape's core inference, netting buyer-initiated against seller-initiated volume per bar. It scales across timeframes and never tires, but discards sequence, pace, and print sizes. Tape reading keeps that texture at the cost of constant attention; many traders run both.
Volume Profile: The profile aggregates prints by price over a session, showing where business was done. The tape shows when and how urgently each piece printed. The profile supplies the map of levels; the tape supplies the live read when price returns to one.
OBV: OBV needs only bar closes and volume, compressing participation into a single cumulative line suited to swing-level context. Tape reading operates at the opposite extreme of granularity, print by print. They answer different questions and fit different holding periods.
